Marianne Burton, like numerous artists from Martumili, became immersed in painting through an intuitive and familial learning journey. Her father, Pukina Burton, a respected senior Martu artist, served as her mentor, with Marianne often joining him as he painted narratives of their homeland. Encouraged to try her hand at painting, she started on 'a little canvas' and has since evolved to craft a distinct and striking style all her own.

Focusing on the landscapes around Punmu and Kunawarritji, Marianne's works typically begin with underlayers of loose brushstrokes in elegant, subdued tones, representing geographical formations, water sources, and vast expanses of the land. These foundational layers are then overlaid with glowing, sunset-inspired hues and intricate dotting that subtly suggests the presence of warta (trees and vegetation) scattered across the desert scenery.
